Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen teamed up for a Malayalam movie titled 19 (1) (a). Movie Story
A girl who runs a photostat shop is our central protagonist. She is struggling to continue this business. One day, a Tamil man comes to her shop and shares a manuscript asking her to take a copy. He asked her to keep the original and copy with her, and he will return later that day and collect it. But the guy never returns, and she later learns that he was an activist who got shot dead. Her efforts to know this man is what we see in 19(1)(a).
19(1)(a) of the constitution guarantees freedom of expression to the citizens. The movie 19(1)(a) talks about how that right has been getting violated in the recent past. When you look at it as a relevant film, it is indeed an appreciable effort. Rather than leaning too much towards the left, Indhu’s vision is to talk about the apolitical mindset of the majority. Once you are aware of the political reality around you, your perspective won’t be the same, and to show that, Indhu gradually builds a relatable ecosystem around her central protagonist.

Movie Review
19(1)(a) also has a tragic theme about people grieving the loss of their loved ones. The film shows how the benign and seemingly unremarkable words said by people, will gain drastic significance if those were the last words ever spoken by them. The casual conversation she had with Gauri becomes the guiding light for the protagonist when she is grappling in darkness while carrying the huge burden of Gauri’s final words on her untrained shoulders.
Director Indhu V.S. aims to deliver this message, albeit in a quiet manner, in her debut film 19(1)(a), appropriately titled after Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution of India that gives the freedom of speech and expression to all citizens. Nithya Menen plays an unnamed ‘common’ person leading a mundane life, tightly looped between her photostat shop and a home she shares with her father (Srikanth Murali) who hardly does anything all day. Not much is said between them, suggesting some unresolved trauma. The only external influences she has are her best friend Fathima (Athulya Ashadam) and a local political activist (Bagath Manuel) only referred to as ‘Sakhavu’ (comrade). Alas, they too have their lives and choices to deal with. However, this nested life gets rattled one day by a chance encounter with the rebellious writer Gauri Sankar (Vijay Sethupathi).
One day, Gauri visits the xerox shop and hands over the script of his unpublished novel. He promises that he’d return later that night to collect the photocopy. But, he never returns. Nithya comes to know that Gauri was killed because of his political ideology. What does Nithya do with Gauri’s unpublished novel? Will the police find the killer with the clue?
