Movie Review

Pathaan perfectly packaged with the right dose of action, thrill, emotion, and drama. Director Siddharth Anand with screenplay writer, Shridhar Raghavan, ensure that the narrative  fast-paced with high points at regular intervals. Shah Rukh Khan’s introductory sequence is easily among the best in his career. He presented as a true-blue superstar of Indian Cinema and deserves every bit of the manner in which he projected on the screen.

It’s a political international spy story with romance, twists, and turns, you’re never sure who’s on who’s side or who’s the real good guys and who are baddies. And in typical Bollywood tradition any love scenes implied rather than graphic – there’s no kissing allowed here and certainly, no more than that. Bollywood as conservative as it was 35 years ago when I watched a Hindi film – sure there lots of beautiful perfectly formed people staring into each other eyes and getting within an inch of each other but that’s where it ends

Controversially some of the story & action take place in Russia and although the Moscow scenery is spectacular and the skyline as impressive as Dubai it felt uncomfortable knowing this was filmed after the invasion of Ukraine coinciding with the script emphasizing the importance of Russia as an ally of India and not wanting to upset them – that didn’t feel comfortable as any doubt the fact the script and plot bring up the sensitive subject of Kashmir which will no doubt not sit comfortably with all. There didn’t seem to be any Sikh actors either.

Shah Rukh Khan, as a brave Indian soldier, looks terrific in action. His style, swag, and his witty punches are worth watching. Besides, Deepika Padukone gets a meaty role, and she also gets into the fight against the enemies of the nation. The one who needs to appreciated John Abraham. His look and actions make him a stylish villain. With this film, he proves that he can pull even an antagonist role with so much ease. The face-off scenes between SRK and John make audiences glue their eyes to screens. Dimple Kapadia, as Nandini, head of JOCR, delivers a neat performance. She is subtle and elegant in her given role. Ashutosh Rana also gives his best.

The female lead and potential love interest of the good guy and bad boy played by the stunning danish born ex badminton player Deepika Padukone who kind of reminded me of the character played by Catherine Zeta-Jones in Entrapment in many ways from costume to location to the story. If this had a Hollywood movie the budget needed well in excess of $100m so the producers deserve credit for making it for the equivalent of $30m. The sound was amazing and the music added so much to the entertainment if you’re able to detach yourself the couple of times they break into song.
