The title was officially announced on 28th April 2019 in the Presence of Priyadarshan, Mohanlal, Antony Perumbavoor, Santhosh T. Kuruvila, and Roy C.J. The budget of the movie is about Rs 100 Crore which is marked as the most expensive movie ever made in Malayalam film industry. The movie shooting was started on 1st December 2018 at Ramoji Film City, and the shooting of the film lasted up to 104 days. The shooting was packed up in March 2019.

The movie is about the Kunjali Marakkar 4 who was the Naval chief of Zamorin of Calicut. Kunjali Marakkars organized the first naval defense of the Indian Coast by Protecting Calicut from the invasion of Portuguese.
